Board Members Engage in High-Level Discussions on Romania–U.S. Relations and Black Sea Security

Board members of the Security Studies and World Politics Association had the pleasure of participating in a meeting hosted at the Atlantic Council Romania Office, engaging in an insightful and productive discussion with Julie Varghese, COO of the Atlantic Council; Andrew Goff, Chief of Staff, Executive Office; and Alex Șerban, Director of the Atlantic Council Romania Office.

The dialogue focused on the current state of bilateral relations between Romania and the United States, the challenges and opportunities surrounding democracy in Romania, and the essential role young people play in modernising society. The exchange of perspectives underscored the importance of civic engagement, strategic cooperation, and youth involvement in addressing today’s geopolitical realities.

Following the meeting, the delegation attended a high-level discussion on the evolving security dynamics in the Black Sea region, bringing together senior military leaders, security experts, and strategic affairs specialists. The event explored key topics such as maritime security, the protection of critical infrastructure, and the growing importance of regional cooperation for Euro-Atlantic security.

The Association was honoured to hear valuable insights from Vice Admiral Mihai Panait, Chief of the Romanian Naval Forces Staff; Rear Admiral (ret.) Iuri-Alexandru Covaleov, Associate Professor at the “Carol I” National Defence University; and Professor Iulian Chifu, President of the Conflict Prevention and Early Warning Center.
