Debate Dedicated to the 2024 Sakharov Prize
Security Studies and World Politics actively took part in the debate organized by the European Parliament Liaison Office in Romania, dedicated to the 2024 Sakharov Prize. The prize honours courage and commitment in the fight for freedom of thought and human rights.
The event opened with remarks from special guests who offered valuable perspectives on the significance of the prize and this year’s nominees:
- Răzvan Szabo (moderator), European Parliament Liaison Office in Romania
- Loredana Licuța, European Commission Representation in Romania
- Eliza Vaș, European Institute of Romania
- Lecturer Dr. Domnica Gorovei, Faculty of Political Science, University of Bucharest (FSPUB)
In a dynamic and authentic debate setting, participants were divided into teams and had the opportunity to advocate for one of the three finalists of the 2024 Sakharov Prize:
- María Corina Machado and Edmundo González Urrutia, for their fight for democracy in Venezuela
- Women Wage Peace and Women of the Sun, for their efforts to promote peace in the Middle East
- Dr. Gubad Ibadoghlu, for his courage in the fight against corruption in Azerbaijan
This exercise in argumentation was a valuable learning opportunity, allowing each participant to express their views and defend a cause aligned with their values.
