First Event in the “Understanding Romania’s Recent Political History” Series

On January 20, Security Studies and World Politics organized the conference “The Contribution of the Constantinescu Administration to Establishing a New Security Framework in Eastern Europe (1996–2000)” in Room “1989” at the Faculty of Political Science, University of Bucharest (FSPUB). The event was held in partnership with the Institute for Advanced Studies in Levant Culture and Civilization.

With an audience of more than 70 students passionate about international relations and diplomacy, the event welcomed as its special guest Mr. Emil Constantinescu, former President of Romania (1996–2000) and current President of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Levant Culture and Civilization.

Mr. Constantinescu offered participants an engaging presentation on the foreign policy achievements of his administration, highlighting Romania’s contribution to strengthening security in Eastern Europe, advancing Euro-Atlantic integration, and conducting decisive diplomatic efforts during a crucial period in the country’s recent history.

The discussion that followed offered behind-the-scenes insights into major diplomatic developments, underscoring the complexity of the decisions taken by his administration in a turbulent geopolitical context across Eastern Europe and the Balkans. The students in attendance greatly appreciated the open dialogue and the opportunity to learn directly from a defining figure of Romania’s recent political history. The event concluded with an autograph session.
